Out-crossing means the crossing between different breeds with no common ancestors. This is the practice of introducing unrelated genetic material into a breeding line. It increases genetic diversity, thus reducing the risk of an individual being subject to disease or genetic abnormalities.<\/p>\n

Making outcross is therefore very important in these years when a large part of Europe’s simmentals are incredibly close to each other genetically. Using a bull born 28 years ago has quite the same effect as if you used a brand new bull that came from a completely unknown population or even another breed!<\/p>\n

Increasing the variation<\/strong> of genes or alleles within the gene pool protect against extinction by stressors from the environment, a veterinary medicine study showed when determining the genetic diversity within cat breeds*(Note in buttom of page). An allele is a variant form of a given gene, meaning it is one of two or more versions of a known mutation at the same place on a chromosome. It can also refer to different sequence variations for a several-hundred base-pair or more region of the genome that codes for a protein.<\/p>\n

For all these reasons we now re-introduce the old Austrian Bull “GS Start” (born 1992) from the Austrian dual-purpose population. One of our good collegues had big success with “GS Start” – here around 20 – 25 years later we still remember his daughters by GS Start as outstanding, long clean cows with plenty of shape, good feet and legs added to outstanding longivity, best quality milky udders and not the least: Muscularity! In Austria “GS Start” showed the same with daughters of this standard.<\/p>\n

Now we got the first bull calf of “GS Start! The calf has been named Sneumgaard RESTART P, as we expect much of restarting this excellent old fleckvieh genetics. We believe that Restart P with its new “old” genetics will prove to be a true outcross bull! Also because his Maternal Grandsire is a bull you normally dont see in the pedigrees: Sneumgaard Investor P.
